Smyrna – Just after 12:20 Monday morning rescue crews from the Citizens Hose Company of Smyrna along with crews from American Legion Ambulance responded to Route 1 NB in the area of Big Oak Road for reports of a motor vehicle accident.

While en route crews learned that one vehicle had left the road and struck a tree along the woodline. First arriving crews requested Kent County Paramedics for loss of consciousness. Kent County Medics KM6A was then dispatched to the scene.

Additionally, Route 1 Command requested a response from Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 4.

Initial reports from the scene indicate that one patient had to be cut out of the vehicle by responding firefighters.

Shortly after the patient was extricated and evaluated my personal on scene Command alerted Trooper 4 that they would be utilized.

About ten minutes later Trooper 4 arrived overhead prompting Route 1 Command to order Route 1 NB closed so the helicopter could set down north of the crash.

At around 1:10 a.m. Trooper 4 lifted off with the patient en route to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center.

Officials have not released the condition of the patient at this time.

Route 1 NB was partially closed while Delaware State Police investigated the crash.
