The Delaware State Police arrested two 14-year-olds boys for attempted robbery following an attempted carjacking that occurred last night, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said the incident occurred on January 9, 2021, at approximately 10:06 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Christiana Mall in Newark for a report of an attempted carjacking. Upon arrival, it was learned that two suspects pulled on the door handles to a 2012 Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot and displayed a handgun at a 19-year-old woman and her 20-year-old male passenger. The victims did not comply and drove off in the vehicle and contacted police. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

The victims were not injured as a result of the incident

A short time later, the suspects were apprehended by New Castle County Police in the rear parking lot of the Container Store located at 2200 Fashion Center Blvd. The juveniles were taken into custody without incident. Officers recovered a magazine to a BB gun in the possession of one juvenile suspect and discovered a BB gun in the area of apprehension, said Hatchell.

The juveniles, one from Wilmington and the other from New Castle, were then transported to Troop 2 where they were each charged with the following:

Attempted Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)- 2 counts
Conspiracy 2nd Degree (Felony)
