Wilmington- Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Tuesday evening, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Heather Pepper.
Pepper said on January 26, 2021, at approximately 6:16 p.m., a 2015 Jeep Cherokee was traveling northbound on Shipley Road approaching the intersection of Delwynn Drive. A 1989 Cadillac DeVille was traveling southbound on Shipley Road approaching the intersection of Delwynn Drive. For unknown reasons, the Cadillac drifted over the double yellow lines and began traveling partially in the northbound lane. The Jeep operator was unable to avoid the collision, which resulted in the front left of the Jeep striking the front left of the Cadillac. After the collision, both vehicles spun out of control and became disabled in the roadway.
The operator of the 2015 Jeep Cherokee, a 63-year-old Wilmington woman, was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
The operator of the 1989 Cadillac DeVille was, an 88-year-old Wilmington man, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.
Shipley Road between Delwynn Drive and Hoyer Court was closed for approximately 3 hours during the on-scene investigation.
