On September 5, 2020, at about 11:18 pm, Newark Police responded to a burglar alarm at a business in the 1200 block of Old Coochs Bridge Road. Officers found that the building had been entered and property was stolen from inside, according to police.
Officials said surveillance video depicted a male and a female removing property from the business. Further investigation found that the suspects used forced entry to enter the business. Newark Police Detectives spoke with a witness who was in the area and the detectives were able to identify one of the suspects as Kristy Jones, 40, whose last known address was in Townsend. A warrant was issued for Jones’ arrest for charges of Burglary Third Degree, Conspiracy Second Degree, Theft Under $1,500, and Criminal Mischief.
Early this morning, Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at about 1:09, a Newark Police Officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Elkton Road. The passenger in the vehicle, Kristy Barbato (aka Kristy Jones), 40, of Elkton, MD, initially gave a false name to the officer, said police. Upon further investigation, she was properly identified and found to be wanted by Newark Police.
Barbato was taken into custody without incident and transported to Newark Police headquarters where she was charged with Burglary Third Degree, Conspiracy Second Degree, Theft Under $1,500, Criminal Mischief, and Criminal Impersonation. Barbato was also found to be wanted on warrants from the Delaware State Police, New Castle County Police, and multiple capiases from Delaware courts. Barbato appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $5,600 secured bail on the Newark charges. Barbato was turned over to the custody of the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle.
