DelDOT Crews Find Man Dead A Week After He Crashed On I-495

Wilmington – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that was discovered Thursday afternoon, according to Public Information Officer, Corporal/1 Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on February 25, 2021, at approximately 2:17 p.m., DELDOT personnel were working on I-495 in the area of Edgemoor Road when they noticed damage to a section of guardrail on the right side of northbound I-495. After further inspection, the DELDOT personnel discovered a 2009 Ford F-150 approximately 200-300 feet off the roadway and down a steep embankment in the area of the damaged guardrail and they contacted the Delaware State Police.

The investigation determined on February 17, 2021, at approximately 11:53 p.m., the Ford was traveling northbound on I-495 in the area of Edgemoor Road. For unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway and the front collided with the guardrail. After impact, the Ford traveled down a steep embankment and overturned multiple times before coming to rest in an area of overbrown brush. The 65-year-old male operator of Chester, PA, was located in the vehicle at the time of the investigation and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the victim is pending notification to next of kin.
