Newark Police continue to investigate a shooting that occurred at the Red Roof on College Avenue Saturday February 6, 2021, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin.
Rubin said that during their investigation Detectives have determined that at least two different firearms were fired during the course of this incident.
On February 16, 2021, Newark Police, with the assistance of the New Castle County Police, executed a search warrant at a residence in New Castle as part of this investigation. Carlos Vasquez, 18, was taken into custody at the residence without incident. Vasquez is believed to be one of the people that fired a gun during the course of the initial shooting, said Rubin. He is not, however, believed to be the one that shot the victim.
Vasquez was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, and Reckless Endangering First Degree. Vasquez appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $76,000 cash bail. Vasquez was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Newark Police continue to investigate a shooting that occurred at the Red Roof on College Avenue Saturday, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin.
On February 6, 2021, at about 12:03 a.m. Newark Police responded to a hotel room at the Red Roof Inn, 1119 South College Avenue, for a report of a shooting. Officers located a male suffering from a gunshot wound.
Arriving officers located a vehicle leaving the scene and engaged in a short vehicle pursuit that ended at Route 896 and Route 4, said Rubin. Officers performed a felony stop on the vehicle and persons from the vehicle were detained. Their involvement in this incident is currently under investigation, said Rubin at the time.
Today, Monday, February 8, Rubin said the shooting occurred in a hotel room in which there was a gathering of people. An argument occurred in the room and the victim, a 20-year-old male, suffered a gunshot wound to the neck. The victim is currently admitted at an area hospital in serious condition.
Rubin said the vehicle stopped by Newark Police directly after the incident was found to have multiple people who were present in the room at the time of the shooting. They were interviewed by Detectives and were released. The driver of the vehicle was charged with Disregarding a Police Officer’s Signal. The driver appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was released on his own recognizance. The identity of the driver is being withheld due to the ongoing investigation, said Rubin.
Less than an hour after the South College Avenue shooting authorities responded to reports of another shooting at the Sonesta Suites at 240 Chapman Road in Newark.
Records show that just after 1:00 Saturday morning police and rescue crews responded to the hotel for reports of a possible shooting at that location. Officials have not released details surrounding the second incident.
When asked on Sunday if the two shootings were connected Rubin said he didn’t have that information and that detectives are actively investigating.
