Police Investigating At Least One Shooting In Newark Early Saturday

Police are currently investigating two reported shootings early Saturday.

Newark Police spokesman Andrew Rubin said on February 6, 2021, at about 12:03 a.m. Newark Police responded to a hotel room at the Red Roof Inn, 1119 South College Avenue, for a report of a shooting. Officers located a male suffering from a gunshot wound.

Arriving officers located a vehicle leaving the scene and engaged in a short vehicle pursuit that ended at Route 896 and Route 4. Officers performed a felony stop on the vehicle and persons from the vehicle were detained. Their involvement in this incident is currently under investigation, said Rubin.

The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he is currently being treated. There is no further status information available on the victim at this time, said Rubin.

Less than an hour later authorities responded to reports of a shooting at the Sonesta Suites at 240 Chapman Road in Newark

Records show that just after 1:00 Saturday morning police and rescue crews responded to the hotel for reports of a possible shooting at that location. Officials have not released details surrounding the second incident.

Rubin said the Red Roof Inn investigation is an active criminal investigation and is in its early stages.
