Driver Trapped Early Sunday, Medivacked To Trauma Center

At approximately 2:28 a.m. Sunday morning, crews from New Castle County Paramedics, Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder, and the Christiana Fire Company, were dispatched to Old Baltimore Pike and Robert L Melson Lane for the report of a motor vehicle collision with a subject trapped, according to S/Sergeant Abigail Haas.

Haas said New Castle County Paramedics arrived on scene to find a two-vehicle collision involving a sedan and hatchback. The 53-year-old male driver of the hatchback was still trapped inside upon arrival.

Firefighters from the Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Company and Christiana Fire Company worked for approximately 50 minutes to free the man from the wreckage. The man was treated on scene by the New Castle County Paramedics for possible internal injures and long bone fractures, before he was flown to the Christiana Hospital via Christiana Care medivac LIFENET, in serious condition. A second patient refused transport to the hospital.

The Delaware State Police is investigating the crash.
