Just after 1:15, Saturday morning rescue crews from the Claymont and Brandywine Hundred Fire Companies along with New Castle County Paramedics, LifeNet, and Trooper 4 were dispatched to I-495 for a rollover crash with entrapment.
Upon arrival in the area, crews reported that they could not find the accident and that they were searching the area. Minutes later crews, joined by State Police, again reported that they could not find an accident. After searching for several minutes a New Castle County Paramedics Offical alerted dispatch that a large section of fence was down in the area of Amtrak tracks.
Shortly after the initial report of the fence down the medic alerted dispatch that there was a vehicle on the high-speed track and one person was trapped. Dispatched immediately contacted Amtrak and advised them to halt all train traffic.
New Castle County Paramedic Senior Sergeant Abigail Haas said responding units found two patients on scene, one still trapped in the vehicle, and one possibly ejected from the vehicle. The trapped patient was a 22-year-old male, in the care of Claymont Fire Company EMTs.
The other patient, a 21-year-old male, was found outside the vehicle and appeared to have been ejected during the accident. The trapped patient suffered minor abrasions and lacerations to his torso, hips, and face. He was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics and Claymont Fire Company EMTs and was transported to Christiana Hospital via Claymont Fire Company Ambulance in stable condition.
The 21 year-old-male suffered multiple injuries and was treated on scene by New Castle County Paramedics and Claymont Fire Company EMTs and was transported to Christiana Hospital via Delaware State Police Aviation Helicopter in critical condition at the time of transport.
Correction: In our first report we mentioned that the patient was airlifted to the hospital. An NCCEMS press release did not mention the helicopter. A corrected press release mentioned the helicopter and we have corrected the story.
