Smyrna Woman Dies After Crashing Into Tree Saturday

Smyrna – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred this afternoon south of Smyrna, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.

Fournier said the incident occurred around 2:38 p.m. May 22, 2021, as a 2019 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound on Ryan Road, south of Sunnyside Road. For undetermined reasons, the vehicle drove off the east side of the roadway and struck a large pine tree, and came to a stop.

The 62-year-old female operator from Smyrna, and sole occupant, was properly restrained, however, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

Ryan Road was closed between Sunnyside Road and Brenford Road for approximately two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact MCpl. J. Lane by calling 302-697-4454.
