Original Story

Newark – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting an investigation into a fatal motorcycle crash on Route 896 (South College Avenue) that occurred Sunday morning.

Officials said the incident occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m., on Sunday, June 6, 2021, as a 2020 Can-Am Spyder 3-wheel motorcycle, being operated by a 65-year-old male of Wilmington, Delaware, was traveling northbound on Route 896 in the right lane of two northbound thru lanes of travel, approaching the intersection with GBC drive.

The traffic signal for Route 896 northbound at the intersection began cycling from green to yellow. The operator of the Can-Am began to slow down in response to the traffic signal. At this time, a 2002 Mercedes-Benz CLK320 was traveling northbound on Route 896 in the right lane of travel, approaching the intersection with GBC drive. The Mercedes failed to slow down for the motorcycle ahead and struck the rear of Can-Am, according to police. The force of the impact pushed the motorcycle into the intersection where it became engulfed in flames.

The 65-year-old male operator of the Can-Am was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Christiana Hospital and admitted for life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced deceased on Wednesday, June 9, 2021. Identification is pending notification to next of kin.

The 16-year-old male operator of the Mercedes was properly restrained and did not sustain any injuries from this collision.

Route 896 northbound between Route 40 and GBC Drive was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Officials said no charges have been filed at this time as the investigation remains on-going.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Corporal/3 Breen by calling 302-365-8486.
