Troopers Identify Man Killed In Dover Motorcycle Accident Friday

Dover- Delaware State Police have identified the individual who died in the fatal motorcycle crash on Friday, August 6, 2021 on Forrest Avenue (Route 8), as 74-year-old John Gilbert of Dover.

Original Story

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is conducting an investigation into a fatal motorcycle crash on Forrest Avenue (Route 8) that occurred Friday night, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said the incident occurred at approximately 8:18 p.m., on Friday, August 6, 2021, when a white 2008 Ford Edge was eastbound on Forrest Avenue (Route 8) preparing to make a left turn into Route 8 Liquor complex. A 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was westbound on Forest Avenue approaching the Ford. The Ford waited for an uninvolved vehicle in front of the Harley to pass westbound, and then proceeded to make his left turn directly into the path of the Harley according to Hatchell. The 74-year-old operator of the Harley attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision. The front of the Harley struck the passenger side of the Ford. The operator was ejected from the motorcycle.

He was transported to Bayhealth-Kent Campus where he was pronounced deceased. Identification is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 46-year-old male operator of the Ford was not injured during the collision.

Hatchell said no charges have been filed at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
