Stolen Urn With Family Member’s Remains Found In Lewes

The urn with cremated remains that was stolen from a vehicle in Dewey Beach earlier this month has been found.

Officials said that on Wednesday the Dewey Beach Police Department was contacted by the Delaware State Police and were informed that an urn was recovered in the area of Love Creek located in Lewes. The urn was found by a pedestrian who noticed it in the marsh adjacent to the Route 24 bridge. The Urn was confirmed to be the urn that was taken from Dewey Beach.

The family has been put in touch with the person that found the urn and arrangements have been made to retrieve the urn from the Dewey Beach Police Department.

The Dewey Beach Police Department is investigating the theft of an urn containing the ashes of a deceased person.

Police said on October 10, 2021, a family from Pennsylvania came to the Dewey Beach Police Department to report a theft from a motor vehicle.

The family explained they gathered in Dewey Beach for a recently deceased family member’s celebration of life. The urn, containing the ashes of the family member, was left in an unsecured motor vehicle.

The vehicle was parked on Dover Road on October 8th at approximately 2:30 PM. When they returned to the vehicle on October 10th, at approximately 2:00 PM, they discovered the urn was not in the vehicle. The urn is described to be 9“x 7“, green in color and a gold “Hope” tree is displayed on the front. It was contained in a black silk bag.
