Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred Sunday afternoon on North DuPont Highway according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.
Hatchell said on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at approximately 1:48 p.m., a 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage was stopped southbound Route 13 in the left turn lane at the crossover to the on-ramp of northbound I-295. At the same time, a 2008 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound Route 13 in the left lane approaching the overpass of I-295. The Mitsubishi attempted to cross Route 13 and pulled directly into the path of the Altima said Hatchell. The Altima veered right in an attempt to avoid the collision but ultimately struck the passenger side of the Mitsubishi.
The 69-year-old female operator of the Mitsubishi was transported to Christiana Hospital for non-life threating injuries. The 57-year-old female front seat passenger of the Mitsubishi was transported to Christiana Hospital with critical injuries. On October 18, 2021, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.
The 33-year-old female operator of the Altima was transported to Christiana Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Northbound Route 13 was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway cleared.
