The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning on Interstate 95, according to Public Information Officer, Master Corporal Gary Fournier.
Fournier said around 4:08 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2021, a 2004 Honda Civic, operated by a 20-year-old male from Wilmington, was traveling northbound on Interstate 95 within the left-center lane and was approaching the interchange with SR 141. Just south of the DelDOT yard, also known as the “Sandbox,” a 37-year-old male pedestrian from the New Castle area, was within the left shoulder area and began running out into the southbound lanes of travel in an easterly direction. The pedestrian then slowed to a walk and then stood within the left-center lane of travel before being struck by the Honda Civic. The Civic came to a controlled stop on the left shoulder of Interstate 95 northbound in the area of the Sandbox.
The 37-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The 20-year-old driver and a 19-year-old male passenger were both properly restrained and were transported by EMS to Christiana Medical Center where they were treated and released with minor injuries.
I95 northbound at the SR 141 interchange was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
