Tractor-Trailer Driver Airlifted In Critical Condition After Route 1 Crash

At approximately 10:15 Friday evening the New Castle County Paramedics, along with the Port Penn, Odessa, and Delaware City Fire Companies were dispatched to the area of Route 1 Southbound
and the Lorewood Grove Road Offramp, in Middletown, for the report of a motor vehicle collision with rollover, according to Public Information Officer Senior Sergeant Abigail Haas.

Haas said first arriving fire department units arrived to find a tractor-trailer that had overturned on the offramp, trapping the driver inside. The approximately 40-year-old male driver of the truck was extricated by
fire department personnel, using the “jaws of life” in just under 15 minutes. The man was treated on scene by the New Castle County Paramedics for head, extremity, and possible internal injuries. He was transported to
the Christiana Hospital, in Stanton, aboard a Delaware State Police Helicopter, in critical condition.

The Delaware State Police is investigating the incident.
