Horse And Buggy Accident Takes The Life Of Two-Year-Old

The Cecil County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a tragic accident that took the life of a two-year-old child.

Lieutenant Michael Holmes said on December 12, 2021, at approximately 6 PM, Cecil County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the unit block of Mount Olivet Road Rising Sun in reference to a single-vehicle accident involving a horse-drawn buggy.

The initial investigation revealed that a horse-drawn buggy, occupied by three juvenile siblings, ages 2, 4, and 7 from Rising Sun, Maryland., was stationary on private property.  As the parents went to enter the buggy the horse was spooked and took off.  The parents gave chase but were unable to stop the buggy.

The buggy traveled approximately two hundred feet before striking a barn.  It then continued onto Mount Olivet Road where it overturned causing the two-year-old child to be ejected.  The two-year-old child was transported to ChristianaCare, Union Hospital in Elkton where the child was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Holmes said the name of the deceased child is being withheld at this time.  The other children involved were treated and released at the scene.
