Police: Woman Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver In New Castle

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Wednesday night on eastbound Frenchtown Road (Route 273) in the area of Quigley Boulevard, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Jason Hatchell.

Hatchell said on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at approximately 5:58 p.m., a 21-year-old female pedestrian was walking eastbound on the right shoulder of eastbound Route 273 towards Quigley Blvd.

At this time, a dark-colored SUV traveling eastbound on Route 273, entered the right shoulder to pass stopped traffic on Route 273 eastbound. As a result, the front of the SUV struck the pedestrian from behind. The impact threw the pedestrian off the right edge of the roadway where she came to a rest. After impact, the SUV continued traveling eastbound possibly turning onto Quigley Blvd or continuing eastbound on Route 273 toward New Castle City said Hatchell.

The 21-year-old pedestrian of New Castle, DE, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was completed, and the roadway was cleared.

Breaking Report

Police are investigating what is believed to be a fatal accident that occurred just before 6:00 Wednesday evening.

At 5:59 rescue crews from the Goodwill Fire Company along with New Castle County Paramedics responded to the area of Frenchtown Road and Quigley Blvd. in New Castle for reports of an unresponsive sick person.

Shortly after arrival, Command ordered the roadway closed. Initially, it was not clear if the female patient was struck by a vehicle. Later reports indicated that the patient had sustained fatal injuries consistent with a vehicle accident.

Witnesses at the scene tell FSU that they did not see a vehicle stopped at the scene.
