Delaware State Police have arrested 41-year-old Travis Newkirk of New Castle, DE on firearms charges following an investigation that began on Saturday morning in the New Castle area, according to Public Information Officer, Senior Corporal Leonard DeMalto.
DeMalto said on July 30, 2022, at approximately 3:10 a.m., troopers responded to the Quik Stop Mini Market located at 531 East Basin Road in New Castle regarding a disorderly subject. An investigation by troopers revealed that a male subject had entered the store and became involved in a confrontation with two other individuals inside of the business.
During the dispute, the male suspect pointed a handgun at the two other subjects before fleeing the scene, according to DeMalto. Troopers began canvassing the nearby area in search of the suspect. When a trooper attempted to contact a male matching the suspect’s description, the male began running away.
Troopers gave chase and were able to take the male suspect, identified as Travis Newkirk, into custody after a Taser deployment. DeMalto said Newkirk did not seek any medical attention, but he displayed signs of impairment at the scene. Troopers also recovered a loaded Taurus handgun near Newkirk’s person. Computer checks of Newkirk revealed that he was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm and/or ammunition added DeMalto.
Newkirk was transported to Troop 6, where he was charged with the following crimes:
Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited (Felony)
