Cheswold Police are investigating an auto accident turned shooting.
Officials said on 08/15/2022 at 3:12 PM Cheswold Police were dispatched for the report of a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Boggs Run in Cheswold, DE. The first police unit was on scene at 3:14 PM and quickly blocked off the area, locating a 16-year-old male with a gunshot wound and rendered medical assistance as other police units and EMS arrived and transported the male to the hospital.
Cheswold Police with the assistance of Delaware State Police and Clayton Police were on location and secured the area of Boggs Run and Parkers Drive in the Parkers Run Development, and quickly determined that there was no threat to the residents in the area following the initial incident.
During the investigation, police learned that the 16-year-oldĀ male was on a bicycle in the area of the 100 blk of Boggs Run when he was struck by a Nissan Pathfinder while on the sidewalk and thrown from the bicycle, according to police. The 16-year-old male took a gun from his pants and began shooting at the Nissan Pathfinder striking the vehicle said police. The driver of the Nissan Pathfinder, who was known to the male, produced a rifle and shot the 16-year-old male in the stomach, according to police.
Three bullets from the 16-year-old firearm struck two homes in the area, no one was injured in those homes and the evidence was recovered. The 16-year-old male had surgery for his injury and is recovering at this time. No other injuries were reported.
While on scene investigators from the Cheswold Police Department and Delaware State Police were able to identify the suspect, 18-year-old, Andrew Aitken, who resides near the scene and had learned that he had fled the area said police. Officers conducted a search of the residence for Aitken to confirm he was no longer in the area. During that search, officers were able to locate the vehicle involved in the incident which was seized as evidence in this case and cleared the scene at approx. 9:05 PM.

Officials said the delay in releasing this information was crucial due to the confirmation of facts of the incidents and investigators’ ability to collect further evidence and secure warrants for the individuals involved. During the incident, we attempted to notify residents in the area that there was no threat but we could not elaborate on the incident. At no time was there any further danger to the community or residents of Parkers Run following the initial incident said police.
