Investigators: Bear Apartment Fire On Tuesday Caused By Discarded Cigarette

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office has determined that yesterday afternoon’s fire at a Bear apartment complex was accidental, according to Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio.

Chionchio said the blaze, reported shortly after 4:00 pm, occurred in the Brandywine Woods apartment complex near the Pulaski Highway. Firefighters responded to the 1000 block of Brandywine Drive for a fire inside a third-floor apartment. Sprinklers inside the apartment activated confining the fire to a couch in the living room.

State fire investigators were called to the scene to investigate the origin and cause of this fire. A discarded cigarette ignited the living room couch inside the occupied 3 rd floor apartment. There were no reported injuries.

Eleven units were evacuated during the fire. Chionchio said the on-site management company will restore the building systems and may permit the residents to return.
