At approximately 8:52 a.m. the New Castle County Paramedics (NCCEMS), Christiana Fire Company, and Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company of Newark responded to Interstate 95 northbound at the service plaza for a motor vehicle collision with entrapment.
NCCEMS Senior Sergeant Abigail Haas said initial units arrived on scene to find a small SUV under the rear of a tractor-trailer with the sole occupant heavily trapped. Due the complex extrication, additional rescue units responded from Cranston Heights and Minquas Fire Company of Newport.
The driver, a 32-year-old male, was extricated in just under 20 minutes from the wreckage. He was treated on scene while still trapped in his vehicle and during transport by paramedics and EMTs from Christiana Fire Company. He was then transported in critical condition to Christiana Hospital in Stanton with head and internal injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The Delaware State Police is investigating the incident.
