On Sunday, December 4, 2022, at approximately 12:28 PM officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of Sandburg Place in Newark in reference to an in-progress domestic dispute that involved weapons. The initial caller reported that there were two male suspects at the residence armed with firearms, according to Corporal Michael McNasby.
McNasby said while officers were responding it was reported by callers that one of the suspects fled from the area on foot. Upon checking the area, a New Castle County patrol officer located the suspect on Newtown Road near Bear Christiana Road. Upon attempting to detain the suspect, he immediately fled from the officer on foot. The officer pursued the suspect on Newtown Road and attempted to take the suspect into custody. While apprehending the suspect, the officer discharged their weapon. The suspect was not struck by the gunfire and was taken into custody without further incident. Neither the suspect nor the officer were injured during the incident. After being apprehended, the suspect was transported to NCCPD headquarters.
Rescue crews responded to the scene for reports of a possible shooting, however, it is unclear why they were called to the scene.
