William Penn High School Cancels Classes Until Tuesday After Shots Fired

Throughout the day FSU has received reports that William Penn High School has been wavering between closing the school our offering counseling for the students.

In a recent update, the school released the following statement:

Delaware State Police (DSP) are continuing a criminal investigation at William Penn regarding an incident where a gun was fired inside the building. No one was injured, a weapon was recovered, and the investigation continues.

To allow for the DSP to conduct a thorough investigation, school will be closed for all William Penn students (including N3) tomorrow, January 11 and Thursday, January 12. All before and after school activities, sports and events scheduled during these two days will be postponed and rescheduled for a later date.

Friday, January 13th is a Professional Development Day with no classes scheduled for students. We will resume school for students on Tuesday, January 17th after the MLK Holiday.

The safety of staff and students remains our immediate priority and by allowing for this break it provides officials with the time to properly investigate and gives everyone time needed to regroup after today’s events.

If students are experiencing mental health concerns, please refer them to the National Mental Health Hotline at 988 or to Mobile Crisis at 1-800-969-4357. When students return to school on Tuesday, January 17th, there will be extra support available for any students who need individual or group support, as needed.

Counselors will be available to anyone who wishes to speak to one. While we are disappointed that this unfortunate incident occurred, we are thankful no one was injured and that students and staff responded quickly to the safety protocols put in place. WE will get through these unsettling times together and will keep families updated.
