Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal single motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Newark area last night.
Officials said on March 4, 2023, at approximately 10:26 p.m., a 2014 white Dodge Journey was traveling northbound on Interstate 95, south of the service plaza. For unknown reasons, the Dodge exited the roadway off the right shoulder and overturned.
Two female passengers in the Dodge, a 23-year-old and a 30-year-old, both of Wilmington, were transported to the hospital. The 23-year-old was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The 30-year-old succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.
The driver, a 24-year-old Wilmington man, was also transported by ambulance to the hospital. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries according to police. The cause of the crash is still being determined and possible charges are pending upon determination said police.
Interstate 95 northbound was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated, and the roadway was cleared.
