Police make arrest in Wednesday afternoon shooting near Banning Park.
Police said Jarel Dickerson, 28, of Wilmington has been arrested for assault and weapons charges following a shooting in Elmhurst – Wilmington. On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 5:19 p.m. officers from the New Castle County Division of Police were dispatched to the 300 block of Lorewood Avenue in reference to a domestic dispute involving a weapon.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers located a 27-year-old female victim who sustained a gunshot wound to a lower extremity. The victim explained that the suspect shot her and fled from the residence police said.
New Castle County Patrol officers and K9 teams, along with the Elsmere Police Department, Delaware State Police, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Section set up a perimeter and searched the surrounding area. Officers with the Elsmere Police Department then took the suspect, Jarel Dickerson, into custody near the Scarborough Park Apartments. Jarel was found to be in possession of a firearm which he attempted to discard when confronted by officers officials said.
Jarel was later transported to New Castle County Police headquarters. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
Jarel Dickerson was charged with one felony count of assault in the first degree, one count of possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, one felony count of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, and one felony count of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
Jarel was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $35,000.00 secured bail.
