Fire At University Of Delaware Was Arson, Investigators Say

The fire that broke out Wednesday in the 400 block of Academy Street has been determined to be an act of arson, according to the Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office.

Firefighters from Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder responded to the scene after receiving the call shortly before 5:30 pm. Upon arrival, they discovered a trash dumpster engulfed in flames.

The incident, which occurred behind Smyth Hall on the grounds of the University of Delaware, was limited to the trash container and caused approximately $500 in damage.

Deputy fire marshals from the State Fire Marshal’s office were summoned to the location to conduct an investigation. The University of Delaware Police Department is also working with the fire marshal’s office in an effort to determine the responsible parties involved.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.
