New Castle City police are currently investigating a reported bank robbery that occurred on Friday at the WSFS Bank located at 144 N Dupont Highway in New Castle. The incident, which took place on June 9, 2023, at around 4:00 in the afternoon, prompted a large-scale response from law enforcement agencies.
As authorities arrived at the scene, all exits of the shopping center adjacent to the New Castle Farmers Market were blocked off while officers searched the area.
New Castle City Police said shortly after 4:00 pm, an individual entered the WSFS Bank at Airport Plaza and approached a teller, claiming to possess a weapon. The suspect allegedly passed a note to the teller, threatening them, before fleeing the scene before the police arrived. Police did not say how much money was taken in the robbery.
Officers from both New Castle City and County police departments arrived at the scene to investigate the reported bank robbery. Upon their arrival, they cordoned off the bank premises using yellow police tape, ensuring the area’s security while the investigation proceeded.
To aid in the search for the suspect, Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 4 was deployed to the area, providing aerial support. While the helicopter scanned the vicinity from above, officers on the ground combed the surrounding area.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
