On Monday afternoon, the Food Lion store located at 401 New London Road in Newark received a phone call around 12:40 p.m., raising concerns about a potential explosive device within the premises. Prompt action was taken by the store management, who immediately evacuated the building and notified the Newark Police.
Upon receiving the call, Newark Police responded to the situation, taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of both employees and customers. As a precautionary measure, the officers closed off the parking lot surrounding the Food Lion store, while explosive detection dogs were deployed to the scene. Multiple agencies, including Newark Police, University of Delaware Police, Delaware State Police, and Delaware Natural Resources Police, conducted a search of the building.
After a thorough inspection by the explosive detection dogs, no evidence of any explosives was found within the Food Lion store according to police. The entire process took approximately 90 minutes, after which the parking lot was reopened, and store management resumed operations, allowing customers to return.
