Police: Two Charged After Man Opens Fire On People Walking Down The Street

The Delaware State Police have arrested two individuals in connection with a shooting incident that took place in Magnolia, Delaware on June 13, 2023.

Officials said at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Delaware State Police troopers were dispatched to the 100 block of Moores Drive in Magnolia following reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, the officers discovered that a 45-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman had been walking when a white pickup truck approached them. Without warning, the front seat passenger began firing shots at the couple as the truck drove by police said. Neither the man nor the woman sustained injuries from the gunfire.

Shortly after the incident, a trooper located the white pickup truck on Millchop Lane and successfully pulled it over as it entered a residential driveway. The trooper identified the passenger as Howard Hampton and proceeded to apprehend him. However, Hampton resisted arrest and attempted to evade custody. Despite his initial resistance, law enforcement officers were eventually able to detain him.

In addition to Howard Hampton, the driver of the vehicle, Cheryl Brown, was also taken into custody. Officials said the firearm used in the shooting was not recovered at the time of the arrests.

Following their arrests, Howard Hampton and Cheryl Brown were transported to Troop 3 for processing. The individuals faced various charges related to their involvement in the shooting incident. Hampton, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition, was charged with Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited, Reckless Endangering First Degree (two counts), and Resisting Arrest. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and is currently being held at the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $40,100 cash bond.

Cheryl Brown, the driver of the white pickup truck, was charged with Conspiracy Second Degree. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 7 and subsequently released on her own recognizance.
