In the early hours of Saturday morning, July 8, 2023, the Delaware State Police arrested 47-year-old Jamal Wing of Wilmington.
Officials said Wing was apprehended after allegedly resisting arrest, assaulting troopers, and driving under the influence (DUI) during a routine traffic stop in Wilmington. The incident resulted in injuries to law enforcement officers and a police K9.
Around 1:41 a.m., a Delaware State Police trooper spotted a black 2021 Toyota Camry speeding on southbound Philadelphia Pike near Rolling Road. The trooper initiated a traffic stop, and Wing, the driver of the Camry, pulled over in a nearby parking lot. However, Wing exited the vehicle without being instructed to do so and ignored commands to return to his car.
As troopers and a DSP K9 attempted to detain Wing, When troopers tried to detain Wing he began resisting arrest according to Ploice. He fought with the Troopers and reportedly bit a DSP K9 officer multiple times. Despite their efforts, Wing continued to resist arrest but was eventually subdued after a struggle. During the arrest, troopers detected the smell of alcohol on Wing’s breath and observed signs of impairment.
In the altercation, two troopers and the DSP K9 named Mako sustained injuries and required medical evaluation at a local hospital. Wing himself sustained injuries from the confrontation and was taken to the same hospital by emergency medical services (EMS). While in custody, Wing continued his violent behavior at the hospital, assaulting a trooper and causing damage to Delaware State Police property police said.
Following his release from the hospital, Wing was transported to Troop 1 and formally charged with multiple offenses. These include two counts of Assault in the Second Degree on a Police Officer (a felony), Assault in the First Degree on a Law Enforcement Animal (a felony), Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol – Third Offense (a felony), Resisting Arrest with Force or Violence (two counts, a felony), Resisting Arrest, Criminal Mischief, Disorderly Conduct, Failure to Have Required Insurance, Speeding in Excess of Posted Limits, and Duty to Sign and Carry License.
Wing’s arraignment took place at Justice of the Peace Court 11, where he was subsequently held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a cash bond of $34,200.
