Early Sunday morning a fatal collision occurred on Shell Bridge Road west of Luurel, leaving a young man dead.
Officials said at approximately 2:16 a.m., a 2017 white Ford Fiesta was traveling eastbound on Shell Bridge Road, just west of South Shell Bridge Road. Officials said that the vehicle was apparently moving at an apparent high rate of speed as it approached an S-curve on the road.
The driver lost control of the Ford while navigating the curve according to police. The vehicle veered off the south edge of the roadway, colliding with a raised embankment. The impact caused the Ford to be launched into the air in an easterly direction. As it crashed back to the ground, the Ford rolled multiple times before finally coming to a rest against the guardrail on the southeast corner of the intersection of Shell Bridge Road and South Shell Bridge Road.
The force of the collision was severe, and tragically, the Ford’s operator, a 27-year-old man from Seaford, Delaware, was ejected from the vehicle. First responders rushed to the scene and immediately provided medical attention to the victim before transporting him to a nearby hospital. However, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The identity of the driver is being withheld until his family and relatives can be notified.
As a result of the accident, the roadway had to be closed for approximately three hours to facilitate the investigation and clear the scene. Officers from the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit worked to gather evidence, analyze the crash site, and reconstruct the events leading up to the accident.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Master Corporal K. Argo at 302-703-3264,.
