After a lengthy investigation, the Wilmington Police Department has apprehended a suspect in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on June 25.
Officials said the incident took place at approximately 2:35 p.m. on the 200 block of North Scott Street, resulting in injuries to two victims.
Officers from the Uniformed Services Division responded to the scene following reports of gunfire. At the location, they discovered a 68-year-old female victim who had sustained gunshot wounds. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in stable condition. Additionally, a 21-year-old male victim was found with gunshot injuries and also transported to the hospital in stable condition.
The case was assigned to Detective Brendan Shea from the Criminal Investigations Division, who pieced together the details surrounding the incident. Detective Shea identified a suspect in the case, 20-year-old Jysen Burgess, and subsequently obtained arrest warrants for him according to police.
On June 30, authorities located and arrested Burgess in New Jersey. At the time of his arrest, he was in custody for an unrelated matter.
Subsequently, Burgess was charged with a series of offenses related to the shooting incident, including two counts of First Degree Assault for the injuries inflicted on the victims. He also faces charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony, and Discharging a Firearm on a City Street.
On July 20, Burgess was arraigned in the New Castle County Court of Common Pleas. His bail was set at $117,001 cash-only. As a result, Burgess was remanded to the Sussex County Correctional Institution pending further legal proceedings.
