In an effort to prioritize safety and security within their school community, the Appoquinimink School District has recently announced a partnership with Evolv Technology to deploy AI-based weapons detection security screening at their three high schools. The district aims to provide a secure environment for students, staff, and attendees at school events, particularly athletic games, where large crowds gather.
Starting this month, each high school’s stadium will be equipped with the Evolv Express® system, a cutting-edge technology designed to detect potentially threatening items on individuals passing through the screening area. Unlike traditional metal detectors that often trigger false alarms and disrupt the flow of people, the Evolv Express® system is designed to ensure a seamless experience for attendees. It allows individuals to pass through at a natural pace and only raises alerts when it detects items that could pose a danger.
Appoquinimink’s decision to collaborate with Evolv was driven by a shared commitment to safety. The district acknowledges the importance of maintaining a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere while ensuring security. Traditional security measures like metal detectors can sometimes feel intrusive and deter from a positive experience. The Evolv Express® system’s non-intrusive nature and ease of operation make it an attractive choice for enhancing security without compromising the event’s ambiance.
Tom Poehlmann, Appoquinimink’s director of safety, security, and operations, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership, citing the ease of setup and takedown, mobility, and ongoing support from the Evolv team. The software-based nature of the technology, coupled with its ability to continuously improve and adapt, was another appealing feature that aligns with Appoquinimink’s long-term security goals.
The partnership comes in the wake of two separate high-profile shooting incidents that occurred in the vicinity of Appoquinimink High School. In September of 2022, two people were shot outside of a football game in the area of Bunker Hill Road east of Choptank Road.
In February of this year, the Delaware State Police investigated the discharge of a gun inside the Appoquinimink High School during a high school basketball game. In that incident, two troopers who were working extra duty for a basketball game at the school responded to a hallway outside of the gymnasium where a fight had just occurred. Further investigation showed that a handgun fell to the ground during a large fight.
The gun was stepped on during the physical altercation causing the gun to discharge and strike a wall according to police. The handgun was recovered in the hallway. There were no injuries in that incident.
Appoquinimink’s decision to adopt this advanced security technology places them among the ranks of over 400 schools nationwide that have partnered with Evolv Technology. In an era marked by concerns about gun violence and safety on school campuses, this move reflects a growing trend toward investing in innovative solutions that prioritize the well-being of students and staff.
