On August 3, 2023, at approximately 11:51 a.m., the New Castle County Paramedics, Holloway Terrace Fire Company, Minquadale Fire Company, and Delaware State Police Aviation responded to a severe motor vehicle collision at the intersection of New Castle Avenue and Rogers Road in New Castle. The incident involved three vehicles, including a pick-up truck, an SUV, and a passenger van, with the van overturning and trapping five occupants inside.
In light of the total of eleven patients involved in the collision, additional resources were dispatched from various fire companies, including Brandywine Hundred, Christiana, Goodwill of New Castle, Claymont, Holloway Terrace, Elsmere, Wilmington Manor, Minquas of Newport, and Five Points Fire Companies.
The pick-up truck’s 52-year-old male driver was transported to Christiana Hospital in serious condition, with internal and multiple extremity injuries. The 88-year-old male driver of the SUV was transported to Wilmington Hospital in stable condition. Meanwhile, the five trapped occupants inside the overturned van were extricated by fire department personnel in approximately 20 minutes.
The nine occupants of the overturned van, ranging from 22 to 45 years old, were transported to Christiana Hospital in Stanton with varying conditions. Their injuries ranged from stable with minor lacerations to critical with head and chest injuries.
In total, ten patients were taken to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, while one patient was transported to Wilmington Hospital for treatment. The Delaware State Police is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
