Troopers Confirm Crash Was Caused By Shooting

Delaware State Police have confirmed a story only First State Update brought you yesterday.

Officials said they are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon on State Route 141 in the area of Interstate 95 in New Castle.

On August 27, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., troopers were dispatched to SR 141 northbound in the area of I-95 for a report of a shooting that resulted in a crash.

Upon arriving, troopers observed a black Ford Fusion with heavy damage lodged under the guardrail and its front passenger, a 19-year-old man from Newark, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. Troopers discovered the Fusion, operated by an 18-year-old woman from New Castle, was traveling northbound on SR 141 when it was struck by gunfire coming from an unknown suspect in a red sports car. The suspect vehicle fled the scene in an unknown direction while the Fusion lost control and struck the guardrail.

The 18-year-old woman sustained minor injuries from the crash. Both occupants of the Fusion were transported to an area hospital for their injuries. Detectives recovered numerous bullet casings from the area. There is currently no suspect information available.

Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit is still investigating this shooting. Detectives are asking anyone who witnessed or has information regarding this case to contact Detective B. Timmons by calling 302-365-8434.

The Delaware State Police are investigating an incident that occurred today on Route 141 Northbound just south of the Newport Offramp to Newport.

Shortly before 5:30 PM on a Sunday police and medical crews responded to the scene after learning that a vehicle was targeted by gunfire before it was involved in a high-speed crash.

Inside the vehicle were reportedly two individuals, a 19-year-old male and an 18-year-old female. The male passenger suffered a gunshot wound to his leg several sources tell FSU.

The female driver, on the other hand, sustained minor injuries resulting from the crash itself. She did not appear to have been shot in the incident sources tell FSU. The vehicle was reportedly traveling at approximately 70 miles per hour when it collided with a guardrail.

As troopers arrived at the scene, they not only had to attend to the injured parties but also investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. This included a search of the wooded area and roadway near the scene, as well as the collection of several shell casings that were found.
