The Wilmington Police Department has made an arrest in a previously unsolved case involving a fatal shooting incident that occurred on December 1, 2022.
After months of ]investigation, law enforcement officers have arrested a suspect allegedly linked to the tragic incident that claimed the life of 44-year-old Lerrie Tate.
On that day, at approximately 2:10 p.m., authorities received reports of a shooting in the 1000 block of North Madison Street. Responding to the scene, officers discovered him suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Detective Justin Kane, an investigator within the Criminal Investigations Division, took on the investigation into the incident. With unwavering determination, Detective Kane’s investigation led to the identification of a suspect: 31-year-old Dayquane Barnes police said Tuesday.
On August 8, 2023, law enforcement officers conducted a successful motor vehicle stop in the same vicinity where the incident had taken place, taking Barnes into custody without incident.
Barnes now faces a range of charges in connection with the case. These charges include First Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (two counts), and First Degree Home Invasion Burglary. Following his arrest, Barnes was brought before the Justice of the Peace Court 11 for an arraignment hearing. Subsequently, he was remanded to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on an imposing $4,000,000 cash-only bail.
