Bear Man Injured In Route 1 Accident Wednesday Dies

The Delaware State Police continues to investigate a Bear area crash that occurred last month after 27-year-old Carlos Segundo-Potrero of Bear, died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in the crash.

On August 30, 2023, at approximately 7:43 a.m., a yellow 2017 Volvo tractor towing a loaded auto-carrier was traveling in the left northbound lane of State Route 1 passing the intersection with the off-ramp from State Route 40 eastbound. Simultaneously, a black 2007 Toyota Camry was negotiating the right curve on the ramp from SR 40 eastbound to SR 1 northbound when it lost control on the wet roadway. The Toyota crossed the grass-covered shoulder and entered the northbound lanes of SR 1 in the Volvo’s path. The driver’s side of the Toyota struck the front of the Volvo in the left northbound lane of SR 1.

The operator of the Toyota, identified as Segundo-Potrero, was transported to an area hospital, where he was admitted for critical injuries. On September 2, 2023, he died from injuries sustained in the crash. The front right passenger in the Toyota, a 32-year-old woman, was transported to an area hospital for serious injuries. The operator of the Volvo, a 49-year-old man from Ronks, Pennsylvania, was not injured.

On Wednesday morning, at approximately 7:54., emergency services in New Castle County responded to Route 1 in the vicinity of Pulaski Highway for an incident involving a motor vehicle collision with entrapment.

Upon their arrival at the scene, responders found an approximately 25-year-old male patient who was trapped within the wreckage of the vehicle. Crews began their work to free the man.

The patient was suffering from head and chest trauma. Once freed, he was transported by ambulance with New Castle County Paramedics accompanying. He was in critical condition at the time of transport.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Delaware State Police took on the responsibility of conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to this unfortunate motor vehicle collision.

Route 1 NB was closed for a lenghty period of time while police investigated the crash

This incident required a response from multiple agencies.

The responding fire companies and paramedics to this incident were New Castle County Paramedics, Christiana Fire Company, and Delaware City Fire Company.
