Newark Police have charged a man with multiple felonies after an incident unfolded at a restaurant in the Newark Shopping Center on East Main Street.
Officials said that at around 7:30 Tuesday evening Newark Police responded to a welfare check concerning a male individual who had entered the restaurant’s bathroom but failed to exit.
Upon arrival, officers attempted to make contact with the individual, later identified as Lee Warrington, 38, of Wilmington. However, Warrington attempted to forcefully bypass the officers, initiating a physical altercation that resulted in damage to the restaurant’s property.
In their efforts to subdue Warrington, the officers resorted to using a Taser, but it proved ineffective in bringing the situation under control police said. After a struggle, the officers managed to place Warrington into custody.
During the course of the arrest, two officers sustained physical injuries that did not necessitate immediate medical attention police said. Subsequent to Warrington’s apprehension, a search was conducted of his person and the officers found cocaine according to the police.
As a result of these events, Lee Warrington faced a series of charges, including possession with intent to deliver cocaine, two counts of assault in the second degree on law enforcement officers, resisting arrest with force or violence, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass in the third degree.
Following his arrest, Warrington was transported to Newark Police headquarters and subsequently appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 via video conference. During this judicial hearing, he was ordered to be held in custody in lieu of $43,100 cash bail.
Lee Warrington was transferred into the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, where he is awaiting further legal proceedings.
