220 Vehicles Stolen In Recent Months, Mostly Juveniles Arrested

In the neighborhoods of New Castle County, an escalating trend of vehicle thefts and attempted vehicle thefts has prompted several investigations.

Officials said over the past three months, the New Castle County Division of Police has been working to address this issue, responding to 220 vehicle thefts. Out of the 51 individuals arrested in connection with these crimes, 44 are juvenile offenders.

The New Castle County Division of Police has issued several recommendations aimed at safeguarding vehicles and property, reducing vulnerability to theft, and assisting law enforcement in their efforts to tackle this growing concern.

Ensuring that your vehicle is securely locked at all times is of paramount importance. Adopting the 9 p.m. routine to double-check that car doors are properly locked is a prudent practice.

It’s important to remove keys and spare keys from the vehicle. Storing them outside the vehicle only makes it easier for potential criminals to gain access.

Always ensure that all windows are closed when your vehicle is parked to prevent unauthorized entry.

Opt for well-lit parking areas to deter criminal activities, and consider parking near surveillance cameras, which not only discourage unlawful behavior but can also provide valuable evidence in the event of a theft.

Enhance the security of your vehicle by installing an audible alarm system or a motion-activated in-car camera. These measures can alert you and others to any unauthorized entry.

Installing an additional tracking device for your vehicle is a valuable safeguard. In the unfortunate event of a theft, these devices can assist in the recovery process.

Avoid leaving valuable items in your car, as they can attract the attention of thieves.

Finally, never leave your vehicle running and unattended, as it presents an easy opportunity for theft.

In the event of your car being stolen, call 9-1-1. Provide as much information as possible to aid in the recovery of your vehicle, including the license plate number, the year, make, model, and color of the stolen vehicle, the vehicle identification number (VIN), and any information regarding tracking capabilities your vehicle may have.
