Today, October 27, 2021, officials are set to celebrate the grand opening of the new visitor center at the Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge.
The new facility is part of ongoing efforts to enhance the visitor experience at this extraordinary natural sanctuary, stretching eight miles along Delaware Bay and covering 16,251 acres. The refuge’s vast expanse provides vital habitat for a wide array of wildlife, boasting diverse environments that include tidal salt marshes, cordgrass meadows, mud flats, tidal pools, rivers, creeks, tidal streams, forests, freshwater impoundments, brushy and timbered swamps, and fields of herbaceous plants. The rich tapestry of habitats mirrors the incredible diversity of animal life that calls Bombay Hook home.
The newly unveiled visitor center is a modern and interactive space designed to educate and engage visitors. It is open daily year-round from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., subject to weather conditions and volunteer availability. Inside the center, visitors will find a treasure trove of information, taxidermy mounts, an auditorium screening nature films, and a gift shop.
The refuge itself offers a multitude of opportunities for visitors to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of Bombay Hook. There is a 12-mile wildlife drive that provides a chance to observe the diverse wildlife, from birds to mammals, in their natural habitat. For those who prefer to be on foot, there are five walking trails, two of which are handicapped accessible, allowing visitors to explore the refuge at their own pace. Three observation towers offer breathtaking views of the landscape and the creatures that inhabit it. Wildlife photography enthusiasts will find ample subjects to capture through their lenses.
Nature and educational programs are regularly organized at the refuge, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the unique ecosystem at Bombay Hook. Interpretative displays further enhance the educational aspect of the visitor experience.
