Newark Police Charge Man With Wearing a Disguise, Attempted Burglary

On October 13, 2023, at about 2234 hours, Newark Police responded to a residence in the 200 block of Haines Street for a report of an attempted burglary that just occurred.  Arriving officers found that the suspect had already left the area.

Officials said an investigation at the scene found that a suspect entered the rear of the victim’s property and entered the back porch.  Once on the porch, the suspect placed a mask over his face and began to attempt to enter the back door.  He fled the property before he was able to gain entry.  The residence was occupied at the time of this incident.  No damage occurred and no property was taken during this incident.

Based upon a suspect description provided by the resident and area cameras, members of the Newark Police Street Crimes Unit located a suspect matching the description on East Chestnut Hill Road.  He was identified as Andre Johnson, 42, of Newark.  Johnson was taken into custody without incident police said.

Johnson was transported to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with Attempted Burglary First Degree and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony. 

Johnson appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #11 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $13,000 secured bail.  Johnson was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
