The Wilmington Police Department has announced a second arrest in connection with a shooting incident that transpired in the 800 block of West 7th Street on Tuesday. The department had previously arrested 19-year-old Meziah Thompson (Left) in connection with the incident, and a second suspect, 19-year-old Javon Turner (Right), has now been apprehended and charged in relation to the case.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday at approximately 10:57 a.m. as two members of the Community Engagement Unit were engaged in a routine foot patrol in the area. During their patrol, the officers reported hearing gunshots nearby. In response, the officers swiftly located a 16-year-old male who had sustained a gunshot wound. One of the police officers immediately administered aid to the victim, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Meanwhile, the other officer initiated a pursuit of a suspect on foot, which led to the apprehension of Meziah Thompson, the first suspect, without incident.
The case was assigned to Detective Brendan Wham of the Criminal Investigations Division, who, through his investigation, identified Thompson as a suspect in connection with the shooting incident officials said Thursday. Thompson was subsequently charged with Attempted Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Conspiracy (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – Two Counts, and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony.
Following his arrest, Meziah Thompson was brought before Justice of the Peace Court 11 for arraignment. The court set a cash-only bail amount of $142,000 for his release, and he has been committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution.
On October 18, the Wilmington Police Department, in collaboration with the Gun Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Division, successfully located and took Javon Turner into custody in the area of 7th and West Streets without incident. Turner has also been charged in connection with the shooting incident. He faces the same charges as Meziah Thompson, including Attempted Murder (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Conspiracy (First Degree), Possession of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person Prohibited – Two Counts, and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony.
