Troopers Identify Bicyclist Struck And Killed Tuesday

On October 3, 2023, at around 10:47 a.m., an accident occurred on Coastal Highway, just south of the Indian River Inlet Bridge, near Matt’s Fish Camp in Bethany Beach, Delaware.

Officials said a 71-year-old bicyclist from Hockessin was traveling southbound along the southbound shoulder of Coastal Highway. At the same time, a 2020 Lexus was also heading southbound in the left lane, approaching the location where the bicyclist was riding.

The bicyclist abruptly turned left, crossing from the right to the left lane directly in front of the approaching Lexus according to police. This sudden maneuver led to a collision between the bicyclist and the front of the Lexus, ejecting the bicyclist from his bicycle.

Despite the fact that the bicyclist was wearing a helmet, he sustained severe injuries as a result of the collision. He was airlifted to Christiana Hospital in New Castle County in critical condition. On Thursday, October 5, 2023, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries.

The Delaware State Police have identified 71-year-old Joseph Jezyk of Hockessin, Delaware, as the bicyclist who died in the crash.

The driver of the Lexus, a 62-year-old man from Ocean View was not injured in the accident.
