On Friday, at approximately 7:00 p.m., New Castle County Police were dispatched to the unit block of Fairway Road in Hunter’s Crossing Apartment Complex for the report of a shooting investigation.
Officers arrived on scene and located the 30-year-old male victim and immediately began performing life-saving measures. The victim reported he was shot by a neighbor who later fled on foot into a nearby apartment building according to police. The victim provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle to officers.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Unit assumed the investigation and identified the suspect through investigative means. Officers remained on scene during the course of the investigation and observed the suspect exit a nearby building where he was taken into custody police said.
The suspect has been identified as Michael Howard, 34, of Newark was charged with assault in the second degree and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Michael Bernard was arraigned at JP Court 11 and issued a no-contact order. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $6000.00 secured bail.
Later that same evening at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers responded back to Hunter’s Crossing for the report of a shots fired complaint. The victim reported that a bullet entered her apartment and struck a disassembled baby crib in the hallway. The victim further advised she believed the bullet entered her apartment from nearby.
Officers followed the trajectory of the bullet and contacted an apartment on the second floor. Contact was made with the apartment and both residents were taken into custody without incident.
The investigation revealed Isaiah Matthews, 22, of Newark was showing his weapon to another person when it accidentally discharged police said. Isaiah was charged with two counts of reckless endangering in the first degree. He was arraigned at JP Court 11, issued a no-contact order and released on a $6000 unsecured bond.
