Helen’s Sausage House, the beloved restaurant originally rooted in Smyrna, is set to open its second location in Newark on Saturday, October 28th, bringing its famous pork chop sandwiches, Kirby and Holloway sausage, and scrapple to Main Street. Clifford J. Murphy III, the grandson of the restaurant’s founder, Helen Achenbach, and the third-generation owner will be at the helm in the Newark location.
Situated at 145 E. Main Street in old Post House restaurant, which more recently housed a Duck Donuts store, Helen’s Sausage House is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
That have garnered a devoted following over the years, primarily from its original Smyrna location, and the expansion to Newark has long been anticipated by locals and University of Delaware students.
“We can’t wait to serve the Newark community. Locals who have been making the commute to Smyrna have been asking us to expand up here for years, so we’re excited to finally be here,” Murphy said. “We’re looking forward to introducing Helen’s to University of Delaware students too. They don’t know what they’ve been missing.”
The Newark location will offer the same extensive menu as the original Smyrna site, including their renowned pork chop sandwiches and the Kirby and Holloway sausage and scrapple that has kept patrons returning for decades.
One notable change in the Newark location is the introduction of credit and debit card payment options, alongside cash, providing added convenience to customers. The original Smyrna location will continue to be cash-only, preserving the tradition that has sustained the business for 40 years.
“I’m not messing with what’s been working for 40 years. Customers come here because they know they can expect consistent quality and good food. I’ll make sure that’s true in Newark too,” Murphy emphasized.
Helen’s Sausage House in Newark will operate from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except Sunday, offering breakfast and lunch. Additionally, it will have late-night hours from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Helen’s Sausage House, a staple in Delaware since its founding in 1983, has been serving a diverse range of breakfast foods, with a special focus on sausage sandwiches. Clifford “Butch” Murphy II managed the restaurant from the early 1990s until 2022, maintaining the restaurant’s legacy of quality and flavor. The original Smyrna location continues to operate from 4 a.m. to noon every day but Sunday and is situated at 4866 N. Dupont Highway in Smyrna.
