Two Teens Charged After Chase Of Stolen Vehicle

Delaware State Police arrested a 16-year-old male from Lewes, Delaware, and a 15-year-old male from Claymont, Delaware, following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle that occurred Monday night in Claymont.

Officials said on November 20, 2023, at approximately 9:48 p.m., a trooper on patrol observed a tan 2008 Volvo XC9 with Pennsylvania registration traveling at a high rate of speed on Darley Road in the area of the I-95 overpass in Claymont.

The trooper initiated a traffic stop after a computer inquiry of the Volvo’s tag showed that it was reported stolen out of Troop 1 on November 19, 2023. The Volvo disregarded the police signal, and a pursuit ensued as the stolen vehicle fled westbound on Darley Road at an unsafe speed.

The Volvo eventually turned into a private parking lot, where the operator and the front passenger abruptly exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The two juveniles disregarded all verbal commands to stop as they continued to flee. The driver of the Volvo, identified as a 16-year-old male, and the front passenger, identified as a 15-year-old male, were ultimately taken into custody without incident after a brief chase.

After the juveniles were taken into custody, troopers discovered the Volvo had struck an unoccupied parked van in the lot due to the 16-year-old male failing to put the vehicle in park before exiting.

The juveniles were taken to Troop 1, where they were charged with the following crimes:

16-year-old juvenile

  • Receiving Stolen Property Over $1,500 (Felony)
  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest

  • Multiple Traffic Violations

The 16-year-old juvenile was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released to a guardian after posting a $5,000 secured bond.

15-year-old juvenile

The 15-year-old passenger was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released to a guardian on an $1,000 unsecured bond.
