Six Students Injured At School On Monday

On Monday morning, at approximately 11:50, the Wilmington Fire Department and St Francis EMS
responded to 100 W 18th Street, Shortlidge Academy for a report of multiple children with burns to the hands and arms. Upon arrival, fire department members found six juveniles with minor burns to the hands and arms.

After investigating, it was found that the students had been playing with a caustic glue in a science room. The glue is used to connect crystals and to make them luminous under blue light. The students were not authorized to be using the glue unattended according to Captain Matthew Marsella. After placing the glue on their skin, they began to experience minor burns to the areas where the glue was placed. Fire Department personnel and EMS crews began treating six students with minor burns, all 1st degree in nature.

Five patients were transported via ambulance to DuPont Childrens Hospital, and 1 child was turned over to a parent.

Approximately 15 fire and EMS personnel responded to this incident. The following units responded: Squad 4, Battalion Chief 1, and St. Francis EMS.
