Police: Man Charged With Stabbing Good Samaritan During IHOP Robbery In Newark

The Delaware State Police arrested 35-year-old Andrew Ford, of Bear for an attempted robbery and stabbing Saturday night at an IHOP in Newark.

Officials said on March 16, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., troopers responded to a report of a robbery and stabbing that occurred at IHOP, located at 2644 Kirkwood Highway in Newark.

The investigation revealed that a man, identified as Andrew Ford, entered the IHOP wearing a mask and carrying a knife. Ford demanded money and threatened the cashier with the knife. When the cashier refused to hand over money, Ford exited the restaurant but was followed by two patrons. While outside, Ford threatened the two men and cut one of them in the hand with the knife as they tried to subdue him.

Troopers said the two men and other individuals were able to hold Ford on the ground until troopers arrived and took him into custody. Sources tell First State Update that the good Samaritans are brothers, that were joined by two others during the scuffle. Troopers said The 31-year-old man who was stabbed was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. FSU has learned that the man received serious injuries to his hand and was rushed to emergency surgery after arriving at the hospital.

Ford was transported to an area hospital for unrelated medical treatment. He was charged with Attempted Robbery 1st Degree, Displaying a Weapon (Felony), Assault 1st Degree (Felony), Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony (Felony), Aggravated Menacing (Felony) – 2 counts, and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (Felony).

He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11, and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $165,000 secured bond.
