Delaware State Police apprehended four teenagers following a high-speed vehicle pursuit that traversed several jurisdictions in Sussex County on Saturday night.
The chase started at around 7:21 p.m. when a silver Honda CRV, with a temporary Delaware registration, evaded a traffic stop by the Bethany Beach Police Department.
Shortly thereafter, state troopers engaged in pursuit as the vehicle accelerated northbound along Coastal Highway near Fred Hudson Road. Concerns for public safety due to the vehicle’s high speed led troopers to terminate the chase.
Delaware State Police Aviation’s Trooper 2 continued to track the vehicle reported stolen out of Dover. The pursuit continued through Dewey Beach and then eastbound on Silver Lake Drive towards Rehoboth Beach.
The chase ended when the vehicle crashed near Olive Avenue and the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach. The suspects then fled the vehicle on foot but were quickly apprehended near the Henlopen Hotel by officers from multiple police departments, including Delaware State Police, Dewey Beach Police Department, and Rehoboth Beach Police Department.
During the subsequent investigation, a firearm was found within reach of the seating area occupied by the suspects in the vehicle. There were no injuries reported in relation to this incident accoring to police.
The apprehended suspects, all of whom are teenagers, faced multiple felony charges including possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, illegal possession of a deadly weapon by persons under 18, receiving stolen property valued over $1500, and conspiracy in the second degree. They were also charged with resisting arrest. All suspects were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to Stevenson House Detention Center under secured bonds ranging from $12,500 to $17,000.
